Surf Reels

A surf reel is a wide-spool reel built to cast a heavy lead weight from a long surf rod and wind that load back against the current. The wide spool lip lets line leave the reel without catching during the cast, which is what sets it apart from a spinning reel.
Surf reels are the narrowest reel category on the site, and the comparison range narrows to match. Size numbering does not sit on one scale, the compact scale some makers use on surf series shares a column with the standard scale used elsewhere. Several brands appear in the listing, spread unevenly across the size range.
Max drag, weight and gear ratio
Median max drag runs well above the spinning reel figure, and the difference shows once a fish has taken the bait rather than during the cast. The gap between the weakest and strongest models is fairly narrow. Median weight is roughly double a spinning reel. Median gear ratio is lower than on spinning reels, with a modest ceiling. Winding a loaded line back over a long cast needs torque, so a slower gear ratio is not a shortfall in this category. Front drag covers most of the range, with only one free spool model.
Matching a long rod
Surf casting rods carry a heavy median casting weight, and that load matches a large reel. Bottom fishing for sea bream from the shore calls for that same large size band and a firm minimum drag. Moving to a longer rod raises the lead weight, which pushes the lower size limit up a step. Rods for this pairing can be filtered on the surf casting rod pages.
Larger sizes on the spinning side
Not every reel used on a beach carries the surf label. Spinning reels include a wide choice of large sizes, giving a broader range of options for anglers working from the shore.
