Rods

A fishing rod is defined mainly by its length and its casting weight. The range currently holds 2,336 active models across many series. Median length is around 2.7 metres, and median casting weight sits in the middle of the scale.

The extremes of the range are wide. A light rod built to cast a few grams and a boat rod built to cast well over a kilogram are listed side by side. Filtering from the centre outward gives a more useful shortlist than filtering from the extremes, since most models cluster around the middle values.

Length and casting weight

These are the first two figures anglers check. Length sets the casting distance and how the rod handles, while casting weight marks the limits of the lure or sinker that can be loaded onto it. The lower end of a casting weight range matters as much as the upper end. A rod rated for a heavier band will not register a very light lure, and the cast falls short.

Medium action is the largest group

Across the range, medium action is the largest single group, with fast action close behind and slow action the smallest by a wide margin. A fast action rod loads from the tip, giving a quick strike, while a medium action rod bends through more of the blank on the cast. On the power scale, heavy is the largest single group, with medium and medium heavy behind it.

Subcategories within the rod range

Most of the range sits under spinning rods, the largest single group. Casting a sinker well past the shoreline is the job of surf casting rods. For very light lures close to structure, LRF rods cover a narrow shelf, and rods worked from a boat sit under boat rods. Each subcategory narrows the shelf down to rods built for a single style of casting.

Filters in the panel

The filter panel covers length, casting weight, power, action, number of sections and brand. Number of sections sets the closed length for transport, with two-piece rods forming the largest group. On brand, the catalogue spans several manufacturers, with two clearly ahead of the rest. Comparison runs on specification alone. The reels sized to balance these rods sit under reels.
