LRF Rods

LRF, light rock fishing, is a technique built around very light lures cast from shore. The limiting figure is lure weight, not the size of the target. This shelf holds LRF rods with a very low median casting weight, a moderate median length and a light median rod weight. The technique is used mainly for small species close to shore.
The line between UL and L in LRF
Power is tightly clustered on this shelf. Ultra light is the largest single group, with light and medium light behind it. An ultra light rod works with very small jig heads and carries bottom contact straight through to the handle. A light rod stays comfortable with somewhat heavier lures, and that difference grows once current picks up. Past a certain lure weight, an ultra light blank sits under load and bite detection gets harder. A small number of heavy and extra heavy models also appear on the list, outside the technique's usual range.
Where length and casting range cluster
The most common casting ranges all stay at the light end of the scale. On length, the two most common figures sit close to the median. Casting from raised rock, the longer of the two buys extra distance. Working close to a pier, the shortest rods on the shelf suit better. Most rods on this shelf are two-piece, so transport options stay limited. This is a narrow shelf, narrowing the filters too far can empty the list entirely.
The line between LRF and light spinning is thin. A longer rod and a slightly heavier casting range move into spinning rods. A small spinning reel covers this shelf, and the small sizes are well represented within spinning reels. How tight this shelf is becomes clear once casting weight and length are both narrowed at the same time, leaving only a short list of rods.
