Spinning Rods

A spinning rod is held and cast by hand to throw a lure and retrieve it. It forms the largest single group within the rod range, well over half of the total. Median length, casting weight and rod weight are all recorded for the group. The surf casting group runs longer and heavier on both length and casting weight, and the difference between the two groups is easy to see side by side.
Casting range and lure weight
In cast and retrieve fishing, the rod's casting weight range sets the limit on lure weight. Two ranges account for the largest share of the shelf, one centred higher and one centred lower, with lures around the middle of each fitting comfortably. A light jig head calls for a rod rated toward the lighter of the two ranges, since the tip needs to register a small load. Going over the top of a rated range causes the same kind of problem, a heavy lure loaded onto a light rod overloads the blank and the cast falls short.
Length distribution
Length sets both casting distance and how the rod handles. A shorter rod works a lure more sharply, a longer rod keeps the line higher above the water. Two lengths, one short and one mid-length, are the most common, with slightly longer rods not far behind. On a narrow riverbank or over the side of a boat, the shorter length leaves more room to work. Where a long cast is needed against current in a strait, the longer end of the shelf is preferred. The catalogue has no separate telescopic label for spinning rods, filtering for five sections or more brings up these models.
Reel size follows the rod's dimensions
Most spinning rods are balanced by a mid-size reel. Within spinning reels, the mid sizes are also the most common. Median reel weight runs well above median rod weight, and the gap widens as size increases, shifting the balance point toward the handle. On power, medium and heavy are the two largest groups. Matching a rod from this shelf to a reel comes down to keeping the reel weight in step with the rod's own casting range.
